Introduction to the Open University of Hong Kong
Open University of Hong Kong The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK), formerly known as the Hong Kong Open Institute of Continuing Education, is a statutory university located in Ho Man Tin, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The main campus consists of five schools: the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Management, the School of Science and Technology, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the School of Education and Languages. The Open University of Hong Kong Press is responsible for its publishing affairs.
Established in 1989 by the Hong Kong British government, the university upholds the principles of "education for all" and "easy entry, strict exit." The academic qualifications awarded by the university at the associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral levels are all recognized by the Hong Kong SAR government. Students pursuing certain accredited degree programs in languages can receive funding through the Language Professional Development Grant Scheme of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research in Hong Kong.
The Open University of Hong Kong is the only self-financing university established by the Hong Kong government. At its inception, it was a tertiary institution based on distance learning. Now it can be said to be a combination of two universities, operating in a diversified mode. It started offering full-time courses in 2001 and began participating in the Joint University Admissions System (JUPAS) in 2007. Currently, there are over 9,600 students studying full-time degree programs at the Open University of Hong Kong[6], accounting for about one-sixth of all university bachelor's degree students in Hong Kong.
